Close Game: Badalona and Moscow Patriots
» Badalona Drags defeats Moscow Patriots on its return to the top Europan Tournament
After the final score of 17 to 6 for the Spaniards in the first game of the EUROBOWL 2003, and over one-thousand fans on the stands of the “Estadi del Centenari”, a victory in Stockholm in the game against the Mean Machines to be played on May 24th would advance the Catalonian team all the way to the semifinals of the Eurobowl, a great goal never accomplished before by any Spanish team.
After a scoreless first quarter where both teams tried to study their rivals, the Drags scored their first TD in the second quarter with a pass from QB Justin Millea to WR Christian LLitjos. Extra-point was scored afterwards by K José María Ramos for the 7-0. That was the score at half time.
At the beginning of the second half, the Drags scored on their first drive thanks to the great job of the offensive line and the runs of RB Jervon Walton. The second TD was scored by QB Justin Millea after a 7-yard run. With the extra-point converted, score showed 14-0 for the Drags.
The Patriots never gave up despite the score and they scored their first TD after a pitch pass of more than 40 yards that got the Drags’ defense unguarded that gave the Russians first and goal on the 8-yard line. On the third down a well-designed play-action pass gave them their first six points. The extra-point try was missed.
The 25-yard field goal by K José María Ramos gave the Drags a 11-point advantage half way through the fourth quarter that the Patriots were not able to overcome, due to the excellent job of the Drag’s defense throughout the game. This was the key factor of the Drags’ victory against a very solid Moscow Patriots with a lot of young players from Russia’s European Junior Champion team, great strength and discipline.
